FMS (Functional Movement Systems) is the screening tool used to identify limitations or asymmetries in seven fundamental movement patterns that are key to functional movement quality in athletes. However, buyer beware, not every institution offering FMS and their slogan of “Move Well, Move Often, and Then to Load The Movement,” are doing it well in North Spokane.

Our opinion of FMS

We love it. My background started at APEX Physical Therapy, in Mead, Washington. As a therapy aide for several years, I was blessed with the opportunity to work alongside some of the best PT’s in the business. I was allowed to work with rehabbing patients and help guide them through corrective / rehab exercises. This experience immediately laid the foundation for our future training program and methods for helping others reduce the risk of sport related injuries.

Personally, we do not run our members or high school athletes through FMS. Between our dynamic warm-up, balanced strength training, total core training, and mobility / flexibility training, FMS type exercises are naturally built in to our programming. Our older athletes run through the school testing during the school year, and our programming compliments this. Additionally, our youth to Mountainside Middle School athletes go through more of a balanced, bodyweight foundational program which is the fast track to better overall performance and injury prevention in the long run.

Over the years, this has led to wonderful feedback from Physical Therapists, physicians, Chiropracters or whatever third party working with our members and teams, to keep doing what they’re doing.

Since the start of our training careers, we’ve believed a balanced athlete is a complete athlete, and this has even been prevalent in the reduction of injuries of our teams trained at Mt. We encourage FMS testing, but…

FMS testing is best performed by a third party. We prefer our Physical Therapy partners for best results and this is why. If one starts FMS testing with a PT group, and has a sports related injury, they’re already on the fast track for fixing the injury. They know this person personally, and have diagnosed any potential risk or issue that person may have before it happened.

This is the fast track to recovery and a wonderful relationship to have. Sure, personal trainers and coaches can perform FMS testing, but corrective exercises and analysis of asymmetries + diagnosis should only be performed by those Physical Therapists. There’s a reason why PT’s and their Athletic Trainers are hired by the school districts as an immediate response to sports related injuries.

We’ve witnessed groups promising FMS testing and to help athletes “Move Well, Move Often, and Then to Load The Movement,” immediately start front loading athletes with asymmetry issues (primarily imbalanced and weak core strength) with heavy front squats and deadlifts. Even highlighting such movements (with improper form and technique) in promo videos. This really demonstrates inexperience on the trainer’s end and a major potential risk for the athlete.
