Do the holidays bring on more then Christmas cheer? If you’ve ever struggled with a little weight gain during the holidays, try Coach Jessica’s Five Favorite Tips For Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain. There’s no need to avoid your friends, family, holiday parties or favorite Egg Nog. Read on to discover how and when to apply these simple tips into your holiday plans.
Step One: Practice Moderation
The weather can be frightful, and while the lights are so delightful, so are the treats, goodies, parties and festivities. No need to stress about staying on track this season. Instead, adopt the mindset of treating your nutrition like the work week. By staying in control of your nutrition habits 80-90% of the time, most should be able to maintain balance with their metabolism, bodyweight and fitness goals.
Sure, there can be extra bloat following a family get-together or holiday party, but that’s completely normal and if you get back on track immediately, nothing is permanent.
To recap, step one is to adopt moderation and eat clean 80-90% of the week.
Tip Two: Stay Satisfied and Hydrated
This is an often overlooked “how to avoid weight gain during the holidays” tip, because in spite of the cold weather, everyone needs to stay hydrated. The cold weather can create a lack of need feeling for H2O, but hydration is crucial for overall health, metabolism health (how the body metabolizes food and body fat (see water for weight loss)), as well as staying satisfied with food cravings. If going to a party or festivity where treats and alcohol will be in abundance drink up on the good stuff first.
In addition, having a surplus of vegetables will fill up anyone’s digestive system with fibrous, nutrient dense whole foods. This will denote the cravings for junk food and promote a lean, healthy physique. You can even navigate to the veggie & hummus dip platter (if there’s not going to be one, bring one).
Tip Three: Don’t Just Stand There, Bust A Move
Whether its dancing at a party or sticking to an exercise routine, keep moving and get your workouts in. The holidays are a lovely time, but don’t let it throw off your workout routine. Exercise is a necessity and the holidays can interrupt fitness programs. So, to avoid weight gain during the holidays, bust a move.
In addition, exercise is a great stress reliever and the holidays can be a stressor in spite of all the joy. Keep moving to relieve stress and burn off additional calories.
For best results, try one of the hundreds of free workouts we offer here ( Workout Anywhere Workouts ). Some can be completed in as little as 8 minutes, aka The 8 Minute Meltdowns. Performing these before party time, or early in the morning is a great way to get your body and metabolism to burn calories in your favor and essential for avoiding extra holiday weight gain.
Tip Four: Have Delicious, but Lighter Snacks Available
Beyond veggie trays, hummus dip and water, there are plenty of healthier options to make holiday parties and gathering enjoyable. Chicken or Turkey Skewers can be a hit. Turkey meat balls, Buffalo Cauliflower Wings, or even our Our Member’s Favorite Top 5 Healthier Holiday Recipes are great alternatives. These options should provide plenty of alternatives to keep one in balance with the less healthy items.
But what can I drink?
If you’re wondering what to drink, watch the video below. Sure you can drink water, our All-Natural Homemade Sugar /Calorie Free Lemonade or Soda Water, but if you want something harder, check out the video.
Tip Five: Find an Accountability Buddy!
Find a friend or family member, and challenge them to the same points as above. It’s always easier to stay fit and healthy with a team, then going at it solo. If you need a support group, we have one on site and in our private Facebook group. All you have to do is become a member.
