A Recap of Marilu Henner’s Energy Makeover With Dr. Oz

Marilu Henner’s lifestyle transformation and Energy Makeover was the topic of today’s Dr. Oz Show and was a clear and concise method for creating the ultimate healthy plan.  She has turned her 30 year lifestyle of real, practical and applied knowledge into a health program that is not only fascinating, but a vegans and clean eating hybrid diet.  Most of Marilu’s principles started decades ago when she committed to no artificial ingredients.  From there, Marilu found that the biggest health game changer was going dairy free (a personal, BIG life change for us and has only paid dividends in our health and fitness), avoiding sugar and eventually (thirty years later), committing to a vegan lifestyle.  “Dairy is designed for baby cows to grow into 300 pound cows in six weeks. Unless one wants to follow their progression, one should avoid dairy.” Marilu suggests.  This she supports with the evidence of our skeletal systems, human physiological ph balance and enzymes all being different and designed for a dairy free existence.  Humorously, Marilu stated, “You wouldn’t ask your neighbor and ask for her milk to make cheese.”  On top of these lifestyle commitments, MariLu exercises daily and commits to her daily healthy lifestyle rules.

Another hot topic Marilu revealed is eating accordingly and respecting digestion.  She goes on to explain that starches digest in the intestines.  Proteins digest in the stomach and fruits digest in the mouth.  One should avoid eating proteins and starches together unless vegetables or legumes are added to the meal.  Veggies and legumes create the enzyme gateway for thorough digestion and absorption.  Fruits should remain separate and consumed at their own meal period.

Marilu believes there are three foods that should never be combined: Proteins, starches and fruits. The reason to avoid eating them together is because they contain components that are mainly digested in different parts of the body. Fruits contain simple sugars, which are first processed by enzymes in your saliva; by the time they reach your stomach, they’re already partially digested. Starches like potatoes, grains, pasta, bread and rice are mostly digested in the intestines. Meanwhile proteins like poultry, fish and eggs are broken down mostly by enzymes in the stomach. Marilu believes that if these foods are eaten together, your body struggles to simultaneously produce the separate enzymes necessary to properly digest the food. The result, Marilu claims, is an extended, energy-depleting digestion process.

To maximize your energy levels, Marilu suggests you eat proteins or starches with an energy-boosting helper. Try legumes like beans, tofu or peanuts. You can also combine proteins or starches with vegetables like cabbage, lettuce, mushrooms and other leafy greens. These foods will speed up digestion and increase your energy. Marilu also shares some of her incredible, clean and vegan recipes.  Nothing but whole food goodness!

Breakfast: Burrito Omelet

Start your morning with an omelet with beans and veggies. This meal combines the protein of eggs with legumes and vegetables.

Lunch: Mashed Potatoes and Arugula Salad

Combine arugula with potatoes. The starch and veggies are the perfect combination for a satisfying energy-boosting lunch.

Dinner: Shrimp and Peanut Lettuce Wraps

If you always feel like you are going to bed bloated, this meal will prevent that discomfort. It’s a perfect food combination because your protein (shrimp) is paired with legumes (peanuts) and veggies (lettuce). This meal ensures smooth digestion before bedtime. Like Justin and Jessica Rundle (Team RundleFit), Marilu believes in six small meals a day or meals with snacks in between.  This provides a steady, revved up metabolism and constant energy much like a furnace.  Her suggestions for good power snacks are fruits, and to eat them on their own.

Marilu’s most interesting rule and one that makes sense is to avoid drinking water with your meals.  This causes dilution of digestive juices and enzymes. Instead, she recommends eating foods like tomatoes, zucchini or red kidney beans that have a high-water content.  She calls these “Wet Foods” and states these selections will help you digest and stay hydrated.  In all, promoting healthy digestion, energy and a strong metabolism.

Just like Workout Anywhere by RundleFit, Marilu believes that these rules should be practiced daily.  Although her healthy lifestyle was not an immediate life choice, it is one she now believes is the key to a healthy, longevity and happy lifestyle.  Why not, she is 61 and looks like 40.
